sabrina selensky is a post-conceptual artist and choreographer based in berlin.
The online performance SIDE JOB, taking the form of scripted group critique, features a team of experts discussing an artwork via video call and presenting it in a spoken, embodied manner to the observing participants (audience), who did not have physical access to the work beforehand and experience it solely through the words and evaluations of the critics during the call. The guiding principle of this artwork lies in its creation in a non-material form.
Furthermore, the work explores and reveals the mechanisms at play when experts ascribe value and meaning to a piece of art, all within a setting of endless constraints and coercion - one that makes everyone hyper-visible as they are mirrored by the screen and continuously exposed and displayed, both alone and in relation to others. Performativity on the screen, the staging of the self, group and power dynamics, hierarchy and repetitive gestures emerge as insurmountable, recurring codes of this environment.
