Can we ever escape the limitations of our environment and achieve our dreams? What is the nature of happiness, and why do we struggle to attain it? How does the passage of time shape our relationships and our sense of self? I had always overlooked theater as a source of inspiration, yet this play and its mood feel so timeless and universally relevant now, as if it speaks to our currents.
Living in Amsterdam at that time, I strongly resonated with that insuperable longing – the desire to be somewhere else – an actual city. Olga, Masha, and Irina each seek fulfillment in different ways – through love, career, or a sense of purpose – but none seem to find lasting contentment. Then, I found a script for a play outside, in front of my friend's studio. It was someone’s graduation thesis.
"Dirty Maria" appeared to me in Act 2, lying on the floor, so I staged her in an implied fencing outfit – without a weapon – at a small theater dedicated to poetry, bathed in red light.
